Episode: DreamIt Ventures Startup Profiles, Part 3 - TapInko

Published: 2008-08-22

DreamIt Ventures is located at www.dreamitventures.com. TapInko is located at www.tapinko.com. TapInko's development process is guided by John Newell, who has a strong background in Microsoft .NET, among other technologies. The application being based in .NET allows them to build a skeleton architecture and easily replace technology later in the game. This is a markedly different strategy than the other teams, in that .NET, like Java, is a more traditional, code-heavy platform. TapInko's technology related discussion items are...

  • Microsoft .NET - The .NET platform turns traditional Java's "Write-Once, Run Anywhere" term on it's head, and instead says, "Write in any language, run in the .NET engine on Windows"... Well, also on Linux and Mac with Mono to an increasingly greater degree...
  • [Microsoft SQL Server] (http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver) - A venerable database server technology, read up on how microsoft 'acquired it' from Sybase here.
  • Micorosoft Visual Studio
  • jQuery - is a great swiss army knife library for AJAX development.
  • jQGrid - For tabular data display based in jQuery.
  • REST RESTful URLs use http's GET, PUT, POST and DELETE actions and represent objects as URLS such as http://blah.blah.blah/employees/1 to expose web services. I'm not doing justice to it... Read up.
  • .NET Server Controls - John advised against using these controls as they are not efficient. TapInko is not using Server Controls.
  • TeamCity - JetBrains' continuous integration and build management tool.
