Episode: DreamIt Ventures Startup Profiles, Part 1 - Snack Feed

Published: 2008-08-20

DreamIt Ventures is located at www.dreamitventures.com. SnackFeed is located at www.snackfeed.com.
Snack Feed spoke about the following technologies

  • Google App Engine is a Python-based application server technology hosted in the Google cloud. Developers can sign up for an account, download the App Engine SDK, which provides a local runtime. App Engine is currently in the famous "Beta" status, and hosting is free for now unless certain limits are reached.
  • PHP is the old standby web programming language. It comes free with any Linux installation, is easy to learn, has hooks to backend databases, and has many libraries and sample code available throughout the internet. Primarly a scripting language, PHP in recent years has added support for object orientation with classes.
  • Firefox Plugins and Extensions - SnackFeed initially released a FireFox plugin that allows users to publish a link to several sources at once.
  • MySQL is their primary database platform.
  • Python - The Python programming language is object oriented, but easy to use for scripting tasks as well. It has some pretty strong adherents, and is the basis of Google App Engine. There are many web frameworks for Python, including webpy, django, and more. See a list here.
